Located in the heart of Los Angeles, The University of Southern California (USC) is a leading innovator in creative, technology, and STEAM fields. When USC conducted a space assessment, they realized the need for more common areas to facilitate creative collaboration among students, faculty, and those who come to USC seeking content creation.
The Digital Creative Lab was formed to service the needs of almost 50,000 students who now have 24/7 access to the high-tech environment. Housed in the basement of the Leavey Library, the Digital Creative Lab provides high-performance computing capabilities for experiential learning in game design, esports, broadcasting, video and podcasting production, AR/VR, and 3D modeling.
When the lab needed a powerful solution for processing large amounts of audiovisual data, they called Spinitar, a Solutionz Inc. company, to supplement their internal team. Keeping with the university's Crestron NVX standard platform, Spinitar installed a Crestron DMF-CI-8 DigitalMedia™ Card Chassis, a central hub for installing and integrating Crestron's DM-NVX-363C HDR Network AV encoder cards. The system extends and transports 4K60 4:4:4 video over gigabit ethernet with no perceptible latency or loss of quality, a crucial feature in gaming environments when split-second timing determines outcomes. Overall, the Crestron system installed by Spinitar enhances the space's capabilities and supports a wide range of activities, including teaching, gaming, XR experiences, video production, podcasting, 3D printing, NFT art showcases, and digital signage. The system enables students, faculty, and visitors to engage in creative collaboration, experiential learning, and content creation within a high-tech environment.
