Telecommuting Isn’t Just For Tech Workers Anymore

Mobile conferencing and collaboration solutions and their many bells and whistles might seem forbidding at first. But sorting through security specs and management details is a job for your IT experts. At their core, these solutions offer intuitive user experiences: anyone with a smart phone or tablet or laptop can quickly get the feel for a cloud conferencing solution like Prime Call Cloud UC.

Which is why it shouldn’t be surprising that the most common telecommuting jobs are not limited to the tech industry. As mobile devices continue to infiltrate every aspect of our lives, collaboration and conferencing solutions have come to redefine work that predates the internet age.

Remote job search service, Flexjobs, recently published a list of the fourteen most common telecommuting jobs in its database. And with only a few exceptions, the most common telecommuting jobs have been around for a while. Let’s take a look at the full rundown:

Accountant

Nurse

Teacher

Writer

Account manager

Bookkeeper

Client services director

Tutor

Software developer

Speech pathologist

Business development manager

Developer

Medical Coder

Virtual Assistant

As you can see, the jobs here are not inherently dependent on modern technology. Of course a software developer and medical coder might not be able to get by without the most sophisticated contemporary interventions, but if the cloud were to vanish tomorrow, accountants and nurses and teachers and writers and tutors would still be able to do their jobs.

This isn’t to say these myriad fields have not been improved by conferencing and collaboration solutions. Telemedicine solutions, for instance, allow nurses to more quickly and efficiently meet with patients, while recording and streaming services make it possible for teachers to deliver lectures and lessons to far-flung students any time.

At this point, almost 3% of the American workforce telecommutes at least half the time. That’s 3.9 million people, a 115% increase from the 1.8 million people who telecommuted as of 2005. A full 43% of the employees spend at least some time working remotely. We are clearly trending toward a world in which still more careers will become cloud-based and conference-friendly. You might not work in the tech industry, but the products of the tech industry will certainly one day change the way you work.
