Sizing Up The Video Conferencing Revolution

Lifesize, which has been innovating video conferencing and collaboration solutions since 2003, recently released its 2019 Impact of Video Conferencing Report. If stats and figures aren’t your thing, here’s the short version of the report's findings: video conferencing continues to grow in popularity, with more and more companies turning to solutions that cut down on travel time, foster collaborative workplace cultures and appeal to a new generation of young workers.

"Corporate lifestyle used to be built around the traditional 9-to-5 job—executives were always in the office or on the road for face-to-face meetings, and flexibility was limited," said Lifesize CEO Craig Malloy. "However, we're seeing a broad lifestyle shift away from the days of frequent flying and in-person meetings being a necessity. Companies of all sizes are opting for more casual work environments, collaborative cultures and flexible meeting structures, where employees can work from anywhere across the globe at any time—all enabled by technology."

Let’s take a closer look at what Lifesize’s report tells us about the tech-enabled workplace of today.

Collaboration and Innovation

Video conferencing and collaboration solutions are clearly having an impact on productivity and success. 55% of professionals surveyed by Lifesize said that companies using video conferencing are more collaborative, while 51% think companies using video conferencing are more innovative. 41% said companies that use video collaboration tools have more engaged employees, and 31% believe those companies are more successful.

Millennial Mobility

We have written before about how millennials are changing how work is done, and Lifesize’s study gives us the numbers to support that hunch. 25% of respondents between 18 and 29 years old report that they use video conferencing technology on a daily basis, compared to only 15% of respondents between 45 and 60. We can also see that young employees are more drawn to mobile work, with 38% of 18- to 29-year-olds using phones for video conferencing and just 23% of 45- to 60-year-olds conferencing by phone.

Home Offices And Reduced Costs

51% of respondents reported taking video conference calls from a home office, and it’s not just a once-in-a-while thing, because 35% of the people surveyed said they’ve reduced up to half of their business travel. That’s a lot of people staying home a lot of the time, which reduces not only travel costs, but also limits office expenditures that simply aren’t necessary for sustaining and supporting a remote workforce.

“The findings of our report indicate a clear desire for constant connectivity, engagement and flexible communication solutions that suit our modern distributed workforce,” said Lifesize CEO Craig Malloy. “Business leaders must actively provide their employees with the most efficient, impactful and reliable video conferencing tools to empower the next generation of work.”
