Polycom and TANDBERG vs. Skype

Wednesday, 13 January 2010 09:00

One question we hear over and over from prospective customers is “Why should I go with Polycom or TANDBERG video conferencing systems over a cheaper solution like Skype?”

Below we have outlined the top reasons why you should choose high-end video conferencing solutions over run-of-the-mill, low-quality desktop video applications:

  • Interoperability issue – High-end video conferencing systems allow for different manufacturer’s video conferencing equipment to be interoperable with each other (e.g., a Polycom system can connect to a TANDBERG system). With Skype, however, users are limited to only connecting with other Skype users.
  • Video and Audio Simultaneous Calls – High-end video conferencing systems allow for some participants to be on the video call while others can dial into the call over audio only. Skype, however, requires all participants to connect through video (i.e., computers) only.
  • Limited Growth – High-end video conferencing systems allow for an unlimited number of participants to join a call, thus assisting with an organization’s growth. Skype limits concurrent calls to 30 participants, making scalability an issue for growth.
  • Audio Quality – High-end video conferencing systems offer a crisp, clear audio. Skype, however, lacks the crisp audio and echo canceller, and also even recommends the use of a headset.
  • Video Quality – High-end video conferencing systems offer a sharp, clear video, with no lag time. Skype, however, lacks the video quality and due to the required network connection has a  highly noticeable delay in the transfer of video and audio information.
  • Security – High-end video conferencing solutions offer a highly secure network through the latest encryption methods that prevent the exchange of information over video from going into the wrong hands. Skype, however, does not have a security network, allowing for information to be leaked and compromised.

TANDBERG Movi PC Video Conferencing Breaks Down the Barriers to Mobile Collaboration

Tuesday, 08 December 2009 3:00

Today TANDBERG announced new advanced capabilities for Movi, its business-quality PC video solution, for collaboration without boundaries. Movi delivers the total package for mobile video collaboration by coupling the ability to share content with its already best-in-class video and audio capabilities and centralized management.

“This Movi upgrade delivers a series of exciting and critical new capabilities that add significant value to the TANDBERG mobility solution,” said Ira Weinstein, analyst and partner at Wainhouse Research. “Movi’s new user interface makes it easier to use and more intuitive for users. However, the key enhancement is the ability to share PC content with other session participants. This new capability allows Movi users to not only participate in, but also to host high impact, rich media collaboration sessions.”

In combination with the award-winning TANDBERG Video Communication Server, Movi enables any PC to become a business-quality video system that seamlessly connects users to any other standards based H.323 and SIP video and telepresence system. Paired with the TANDBERG PrecisionHD USB camera, Movi enables high definition 720p 30fps video to ensure the highest resolution for the best call experience. This means when calling into a telepresence or video conference meeting, Movi will operate with superior HD quality to provide the best visual experience for all participants. This powerful solution can be deployed to thousands in minutes with TANDBERG's large scale provisioning solution and extends an enterprise’s video network to enable cost-effective, easy-to-use video.

“Businesses can no longer be limited by their office locations. Effective mobile collaboration is a necessity for decision making and responsiveness in today's economy," said Fredrik Halvorsen, TANDBERG CEO. "Movi enables people anywhere in the world to come together face-to-face using business-quality PC video while sharing content with colleagues, customers and suppliers. This allows the legions of remote and dispersed workers to become equal members of the global video community.”

Movi helps ensure remote productivity and seamless enterprise mobility through real-time content sharing and contact presence functionality. The separate video and control interfaces coupled with the use of directories make access to real-time presence information for other Movi users and initiating a video call as simple as a mouse click. Best of all, interoperability with standards compliant multipoint control units ensures that Movi is not limited to single point-to-point connections like other PC-based solutions.  It allows users to simultaneously connect with multiple users on different devices, optimizing call quality and experience for all. Moreover, picture-in-picture capabilities for content sharing and self view provide flexibility to see who you are talking to while collaborating or sharing content. Movi also takes full advantage of TANDBERG's intelligent network features like firewall traversal, multipoint conferencing, recording and archiving, and the ability to connect with legacy ISDN services.

According to Michael Young, Director of Telemedicine at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Movi has enabled physicians and patients from all over North Carolina to connect and collaborate with doctors at the Cancer Center, resulting in greater patient care.

“Movi is an integral part of our video solution and enables our doctors to collaborate using their PCs no matter their geographic location,” said Young. “Now, with the added capability of standards based content sharing on Movi, our physicians can collaborate at an even higher level than before; sharing documents and applications from the field while engaging in face-to-face communications. The end result is a higher level of care for our patients across the entire state and a level of collaboration that was not possible before without significant and time consuming travel.”

Sustainable Broadband Adoption (SBA)

Friday, 18 September 2009 08:00

Sustainable Broadband Adoption (SBA) is a $250 million grant program with no floor and no ceiling and two remaining application rounds (December 2009, and April 2010). This grant will provide broadband education, awareness, training, access, equipment, and support to community anchor institutions (e.g., schools, libraries, medical and healthcare providers, community colleges, and other institutions of higher education, and other community support organizations), and the funds can be used to purchase video conferencing equipment.

SBA grants encourage sustainable adoption of broadband services by:

  1. Acquiring broadband-related equipment, hardware, software, and digital network technology for broadband services (e.g., video conferencing technology)
  2. Developing and providing education, training, support, and awareness programs or web-based content
  3. Conducting broadband-related public education, outreach, support, and awareness campaigns
  4. Implementing innovative programs to facilitate greater access to broadband service, devices and equipment
  5. Undertaking other projects and activities that are consistent with the purposes for which the program is established
