Telemedicine has recently been used as a resource of the military in a variety of different departments including education, training, and specialist referrals. Telemedicine has recently become even more important for intuitions like the military because the doctors and healthcare professionals are spread so thinly around the globe. With budget cuts the option to hire more military doctors and personnel is simply not an option.
Luckily video conferencing and telecommunication allows people to be in several places at once. By using this technology doctors are able to deliver educational content and train any new or existing staff all without having to leave their location or the need to travel.
Recently Polycom teamed up with the Italian military to install a telemedicine solution in two ships to naval sites in Milan, London, Rome, Munich, Chicago, Taranto, and Switzerland. The two ships were connected for a day-long training session of a live laparoscopic surgery. This operation was on board one of the ships and was able to show a minimally invasive live removal of a herniated abdominal diastases. This event was used as training and education for doctors offsite.
